The New York Yankees have added Cody Bellinger, Paul Goldschmidt, Devin Williams and Max Fried this winter. However, another big move could really put the team over the top.
If the Yankees make a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals everyone expects it to be for Nolan Arenado. However, FanSided’s James Nolan proposed this trade to bring Brendan Donovan to the Bronx:
- Yankees receive: second baseman/outfielder Brendan Donovan
- Cardinals receive: outfielder Spencer Jones
“Donovan would be a perfect fit for the Yankees roster right now,” wrote Nolan. “He gets on base a ton, as he holds a career .364 on-base percentage. The 27-year-old also holds a .280 lifetime batting average. Allowing stars like Judge, Bellinger, Goldschmidt, Stanton and Chisholm to drive in a player like Donovan would be ideal for 2025.”
Donovan slashed .278/.342/.417 last season with a career-high 14 home runs. He won the Utility Gold Glove Award in 2022. He has made over 100 starts at second base in his career. The Yankees could plug him in and have an infield of Jazz Chisholm Jr., Anthony Volpe, Donovan and Goldschmidt. He will not be a free agent until 2028.
The Yankees need to add an infielder to avoid using DJ LeMahieu as an everyday player. LeMahieu is past his prime and has had a series of injuries keeping him off the field. Parting with Jones would be tough, but Jasson Domínguez’s rise could make the move a little easier.
“The Cardinals are prospect-hunting, and Jones is an intriguing one,” wrote Nolan. “Through three minor league seasons, the 23-year-old prospect holds a .270 batting average with a .800 OPS. He was an absolute star at Vanderbilt and became one of the most highly touted young players. During his time with Vanderbilt, he mashed 73 home runs while posting a staggering .329 batting average.”
