Texas vs. Georgia live score, updates, highlights from 2024 SEC championship game

The Georgia Bulldogs are back in the SEC title game, while the Texas Longhorns are making their first appearance in their first year in the conference.

With conference re-alignment, the SEC decided to forego divisions. Rather than the winner of the East Division taking on the winner of the West Division, the 2024 SEC title game features just the two teams with the best conference records.

Texas finished the regular season with an 11-1 record, going 7-1 in conference play. The Longhorns’ lone loss game against Georgia. It was a back-and-forth game, but turnovers sealed the loss for Texas. Quarterback Quinn Ewers threw two touchdowns but had an interception and lost two fumbles. Backup quarterback Arch Manning saw limited playing time.

Georgia won back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022. The Dawgs had eyes on making it three in a row in 2023 but lost to Alabama in the SEC championship game. This caused Georgia to fall out of the last edition of the four-team CFP.

This year, the Bulldogs are likely in the 12-team playoff regardless of how they finish this game if the committee sticks to what it has said about losses in the conference championship not hurting a team’s resume.

PLAYOFF PICTURE: Texas scenarios | Georgia scenarios

7:50 p.m.: Ewers and Wingo link up once more, this time for a momentous seven-yard gain on third-and-five. Texas’ drive goes on.

7:48 p.m.: Texas will start the extra period(s) with possession. The Longhorns kickoff their odyssey at Georgia’s 25-yard line.

End of regulation: Georgia 16, Texas 16

7:44 p.m.: Georgia runs the ball and regulation comes to a close. We’re headed to overtime.

7:41 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! Auburn puts it right down the middle. Gutsy effort there by Texas’ star kicker. We’re even at 16.

Georgia 16, Texas 16

7:40 p.m.: Auburn is up to the plate once more. He’s missed two kicks wide left. We’ll see if he was able to correct those errors on this attempt from 37 out.

7:36 p.m.: Ewers looks deeps and appears to have Ryan Wingo open in the end zone. He wasn’t quite able to reach the talented pass-catcher. But that was due to an infraction: Everette got into Wingo as he attempted to reach for the ball, prompting a pass interference call. Texas is now firmly entrenched in the red zone.

7:35 p.m.: Ewers and more link up once more, this time for nine yards. The Longhorns are in field goal range and look poised to attempt a game-tying attempt at some point, assuming they don’t go for the end zone first. Can Auburn overcome his earlier misses to even the game up at 16?

7:34 p.m.: Texas moves the chains on fourth-and-two. A big play was required. And Ewers and Moore did just enough to suffice.

7:25 p.m.: INTERCEPTION! With Georgia in field goal range, Smart and Co. dial up a pass play for some reason on third-and-long. The play goes about as poorly as one could imagine, with Stockton sending the ball straight into the path of Texas defensive back Jahdae Barron. One of the most bizarre plays of the season could give the Longhorns some life. We haven’t even hit the two minute warning yet.

7:19 p.m.: INTERCEPTION! Ewers fires a dart…right into Everette’s hands. That’s his second pick of the day. And this one could prove especially critical. The Longhorns have the ball inside of Texas’ 30 merely needing to keep the clock ticking to hoist the SEC title.

7:18 p.m.: Back-to-back negative plays, the last of which was a sack, give Georgia a mountain to climb on third-and-long.

7:13 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! Georgia falls short of the end zone. However, its impressive drive sets up another chip shot for Woodring to put the Bulldogs back in front.

Georgia 16, Texas 13

7:06 p.m.: The Bulldogs’ run game has proven increasingly effective in this one. Case in point: Nate Frazier Jr., who scurried down the field for 18 and 14 yards on successive carries.

7:02 p.m.: FAKE PUNT! Smart is digging deep into his treasure trove of play calls. His latest trick: a fake punt! Arian Smith fielded a toss on the deceptive call, brandishing his newfound dance partner before being brought down past the first down marker.

6:57 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! Ewers hit DeAndre Moore Jr. on the slant route. The sophomore pass-catcher proceeded to do the rest, leaving his marker sprawled on the canvas as he raced 41 yards into pay dirt.

Georgia 13, Texas 13

6:55 p.m.: Solid pitch-and-catch between Ewers and Golden accounts for 25 yards. Perhaps that can breathe some life into a fairly toothless Longhorn attack.

End of third quarter: Georgia 13, Texas 6

6:49 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! Georgia extends its lead via chip shot field goal.

Georgia 13, Texas 6

6:46 p.m.: Smart wheels his offense back out on the field and fourth-and-three. The call works a treat; not only does Georgia convert via bruising Cash Jones run, but the Longhorns are whistled for a face mask call. First and goal inside the eight for the Bulldogs.

6:43 p.m.: Etienne finds the hole and erupts, rambling down the field for 48 yards. Within seconds, Georgia finds itself ever so close to Texas’ end zone…again.

6:39p.m.: Texas is unable to cut into that Georgia advantage. Auburn sees his second kick of the day miss its target, albeit this one came from 51 yards out. The Bulldogs will start their next possession at their own 33-yard line.

6:35 p.m.: There were some moments of bliss during the Bulldogs’ possession. But a Stockton fumble which whistled out of bounds proved too much to overcome. Another punt is on the horizon.

6:29 p.m.: Another Texas drive turns to ashes, prompting a Michael Kern punt. Let’s see if Stockton can engineer another scoring drive and help Georgia extend its advantage.

6:20 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! So far so good for Stockton and Co. The redshirt sophomore carried his side down the field — bolstered by some solid runs by Trevor Etienne and Nate Frazier. Before long, it was Georgia frolicking in the end zone; Etienne trotted in from short distance, giving the Dawgs their first lead of the game.

Georgia 10, Texas 6

6:10 p.m.: Beck is done of the day with injury. Now, the responsibility will fall on the shoulders of backup Gunner Stockton to lead the Dawgs to SEC glory. He’s got his work cut out for him as the second half gets underway.

End of second quarter: Texas 6, Georgia 3

5:40 p.m.: FUMBLE! Beck ends the half with a rather awkward fumble. Looks like he took quite the shot to his shoulder when he went down, too. Not ideal by any means. Will be onto look out for during the second half.

5:38 p.m.: Errors have opened up across the Longhorns’ display thus far. Between dropped passes and untimely penalties, Texas has let a few opportunities slip through its grip. Another drive that looked fairly promising fell apart at the last hurdle. UGA will get the ball back with less than a minute left in the half.

5:28 p.m.: Another UGA drive ends ever so quickly. Texas has four minutes to operate before halftime commences.

5:25 p.m.: Auburn’s perfect half comes to an end as his field goal attempts spurns the uprights. Georgia has a chance to even the game up or perhaps take the lead before we head into the halftime break.

5:15 p.m.: Silas Bolden has come up in a major way the past few plays. First, he raced through Georgia’s defense for a 20-yard gain, one that soon became 35 yards due to an unnecessary roughness call. Then,  he sprang free for an additional 16 yards and fielding a catch from Ewers. What a way to make an introduction. Texas is approaching the Bulldogs’ red zone.

5:12 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! Georgia gets itself on the board via a Peyton Woodring 44-yarder.

Texas 6, Georgia 3

5:11 p.m.: With one fell swoop, the Bulldogs are on the cusp of the red zone.

5:09 p.m.: Georgia records its first sizable offensive play of the day, gobbling up 18 yards via a Beck-Ben Yurosek pitch-and-catch. Looks like the Bulldogs have just breached Texas’ territory, too.

5:02 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! For a moment, it seemed as if the Longhorns could find their way into Georgia’s red zone. Penalties scorned them a bit. But they were still able to double their lead via Auburn’s impressive leg.

Texas 6, Georgia 0

End of first quarter: Texas 3, Georgia 0

4:50 p.m.: Texas finishes the first frame with a flourish as Ewers finds Golden with a delightful toss. Golden made sure to showcase his skillset on the ensuing catch, stretching far to reel in Ewers’ delicate throw.

4:42 p.m.: The Bulldogs haven’t been able to muster much of anything so far. Scurried off the field shortly after scurrying back on following Texas’ score. Carson Beck has just 15 yards.

4:36 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! Things slowed down for the Longhorns a bit after an untimely offensive pass interference call inside the red zone. No matter, though: star kicker Bert Auburn split the uprights from 41 yards out to open the scoring for Texas.

Texas 3, Georgia 0

4:33 p.m.: Texas is finding its form on the offensive end. Ewers just connected with Matthew Golden and Isaiah Bond in quick succession to bring the Longhorns deep into Bulldogs territory.

4:30 p.m.: Georgia couldn’t capitalize on its forced turnover, sending the ball back into Texas’ waiting grasp after a brief foray with possession.

4:22 p.m.: INTERCEPTION! After a precarious start, Texas looked to be rolling down the field. That is, until Ewers was picked off by Georgia corner Daylen Everette, who was quick to react after the ball bounced out of Isaiah Bond’s hands.

4:15 p.m.: And we’re off from Mercedes Benz Stadium! Quinn Ewers leads the Longhorns out onto the field.

4:05 p.m.: Kickoff is fast approaching. We’re mere moments away from one of college football’s highest-profile matchups. Both sides are strutting through the darkness as they make their way to the gleaming verdant gridiron.

3:30 p.m.: Luminaries are littered across both sidelines. One of the most notable? Vince Young, who led those lovable Longhorns to glory in 2005.

3:10 p.m.: Both sides are getting their warmups in. We’re a little less than an hour away from kickoff from Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

2:45 p.m.: Looks like both teams got the memo on today’s outfits. They strut into Atlanta’s gleaming colosseum dressed to the nines, just as one would expect.

2:30 p.m.: It seems Georgia fans are in fine form for today’s showdown.
