Zach Edey and top-seeded Purdue continue their March through the 2024 NCAA Tournament and take on second-seeded Tennessee in the Elite Eight on Sunday.

The Boilermakers are making their second Elite Eight appearance in five seasons, last making the Regional Finals in 2019, when they lost to eventual national champion Virginia in overtime. Prior to the 2019 season, Purdue last made the Elite Eight in 2000.

Edey, the reigning national player of the year, scored 27 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lift the Boilermakers to an 80-68 victory over fifth-seeded Gonzaga in the Sweet 16 on Friday night.

In three NCAA Tournament games this season, Edey has 80 points, 49 rebounds and six assists. Edey joins Wake Forest’s Len Chappell (1960) and West Virginia’s Jerry West (1961) as the only players with at least 80 points, 45 rebounds and five assists in the first three NCAA Tournament games.

Braden Smith recorded his eighth double-double of the season with 14 points, 15 assists and eight rebounds. The 15 assists are the third most in a game in school history and the 10th most by any player in the NCAA Tournament. It was tied for the most assists by a Big Ten player ever in an NCAA Tournament game with Indiana’s Keith Smart and Ohio State’s Aaron Craft.

Tennessee beat third-seeded Creighton, 82-75, Friday night at Little Caesars Arena. The Volunteers earned the second Elite Eight appearance in program history.

Fifth-year guard Dalton Knecht scored a game-high 26 points for Tennessee, which played without five-year starter Santiago Vescovi, who was out with the flu.

Tennessee’s 27 victories this year match the fourth highest single-season win total in program history, tying the mark in 2021-22, as this is the second time in three years it has hit that mark.
