While the NHL offseason is in full swing, the future of the league isn’t taking any time off. 

The 2023 Hlinka Gretzky Cup takes over the summer, as some of the best U18 players in the world have traveled over to Slovakia and the Czech Republic to take part in the international tournament.

The Hlinka Gretzky Cup is one of the first chances for members of the 2024 and 2025 NHL Draft classes to participate on the international stage, as well as the potential to win a medal. Canada defeated Sweden in last year’s championship game to win the country its 23rd Hlinka gold medal, most of all time.

However, not all of the best U18 players will be in attendance. Those top players that are being considered for the U20 national team to play at the World Juniors this winter may be partaking in the World Junior Summer Showcase, and not at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup.

When is the 2023 Hlinka Gretzky Cup?

The 2023 Hlinka Gretzky Cup begins on Monday, July 31 and runs until Saturday, Aug. 5.

The preliminary round is set to run from July 31 to Aug. 2. Once round-robin play is over, then the semifinals, fifth-place and seventh-place matches will take place on Aug. 4 and the medal games will be on Aug. 5.

Canadian viewers can watch all Team Canada matches and certain preliminary round contests, as well as the semifinal and medal games, on TSN, or can stream the games through TSN.ca, TSN+ or in the TSN app.

There are eight teams competing at the 2023 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.

The clubs are split into two groups of four. Each team will play three games in a round-robin fashion, gaining points for wins, overtime wins and overtime losses.

The two top teams from each group advance to the semifinals. The No. 1 seed from Group A will face the No. 2 seed from Group B and vice versa.

The winners of those semifinals will play in the gold medal game, and the losers will square off for bronze.
