The Slam Dunk Contest is viewed as the marquee event of NBA All-Star Weekend, but in recent years, a lack of star participation has caused the competition to lose its luster.
If Pelicans forward Zion Williamson has his way, he’ll do his part to add more star power to the contest.
After New Orleans’ win over Toronto Tuesday, Williamson was asked if he could see himself taking part in the Dunk Contest in the future. While conditional, the 23-year-old’s answer could be enough to strum up excitement among NBA fans.
“I gotta do my part and make the All-Star Game,” Williamson said. “If I’m in the All-Star Game, I’ll do the Dunk Contest, but if I’m not, I’m not doing it.”

The notion of Williamson earning an All-Star selection in 2025 is not far-fetched by any means. At 23, he’s earned All-Star nods in two of his four seasons on the floor, though he did miss out on a selection to the most recent NBA All-Star Game.
After missing out in 2024, perhaps Williamson’s proclamation is an early campaign to get fans on board for voting him into the 2025 NBA All-Star Game. Given his explosiveness and athleticism, the fans’ desire to see him in the Dunk Contest could make Williamson a leading All-Star vote-getter.
Williamson is also a self-proclaimed fan of the old NBA game and could view his Dunk Contest candidacy as something that aligns him with all-time greats like Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan and Dominique Wilkins, each of whom participated in — and won — the NBA’s Dunk Contest.
In 2024, Celtics forward Jaylen Brown became the first All-Star to also participate in the Dunk Contest since Victor Oladipo in 2018. One year prior, DeAndre Jordan earned a third-place finish in the Dunk Contest before playing in Sunday’s All-Star Game.

You have to go back to 2011 to find the last All-Star to win the Dunk Contest in its traditional format, as rookie Blake Griffin captured the title with his famous dunk over a Kia. (John Wall won it in 2014 as an All-Star, though the competition had a team element to it.)
If Williamson earns the nod next year, he would put himself in a position to become the first All-Star to win the Dunk Contest in 14 years.
